Caribou Picture

In Caribou picture galleries, you’ll see medium-sized deer. The species is distinguished by its brown coat and dense cream-colored mane around the neck. The hallmark of the species is large curving antlers. Both sexes have antlers, but in bulls they are much larger.

Even a single look at a Caribou picture makes it evident that these animals are perfectly adapted to harsh conditions. Their long legs make it possible to find food under deep snow. Large, crescent shaped hooves distribute weight effectively and allow these large animals move over snow or muskeg. The ears and tail of the Caribou are short and covered with fur to reduce heat loss. The whole body and muzzle are covered with hollow hair to provide insulation. The Caribou has a very slow metabolism in winter. All these adaptations help them survive in cold winter, but they don’t work without accumulating enough fat reserves in summer.

Many Caribou picture galleries feature these animals during migration. The Caribou is mostly migratory. The mountain Caribou makes seasonal migrations in spring and in fall between mountainous meadows and forested foothills. The boreal subspecies wanders throughout the year in search for food. Their winter and summer ranges tend to overlap. The bulk of the winter Caribou diet consists of arboreal and terrestrial lichen that is not popular with other ungulates. The summer diet of the Caribou is more varied. It includes shrubs, forbs, grasses, berries, and even bird’s eggs.

In the wild, Caribou are found in arctic regions of North America, Northern Europe, and Siberia. Many Caribou live in a semi-domesticated state herded by native tribes. For many centuries, native people of America, Russia, and Scandinavia relied on these animals as a source of food, clothes, tools, and medicines. There are many ancient methods of Caribou hunts, but many tribes prefer migrating together with the herd instead of stalking these animals. Today, this species is rather numerous. It’s well adapted to harsh climates and doesn’t suffer from habitat loss. It’s legal to hunt these animals in many parts of their range. There are many websites that offer Caribou hunting outfitters and many Caribou picture galleries.
