Caribou - The Origin of the Name

A Micmac Indian word is believed to have given Caribou its name. Translated from the Indian language, it means "the one that paws, or shovels." Indeed, Caribou's concave hooves can work not only like snowshoes that keep the mammals sure-footed on the deep snow, but also like scoops to shovel and find their food under the snow.

Caribou - Antlers

Both Caribou males and females possess antlers. They fall off old bulls after the rut period in November and December. Cows keep their antlers until the early June at the time when they have calved. Young cows tend to drop their antlers in April and May.

Large antlers in Caribou are considered an indication of good genes. Cows are known to prefer mating with males possessing large antlers and take it as a sign of a fit individual. Antlers are also helpful for Caribou to recognize one another. Judging by the size of the antlers, they can estimate who they are able to beat in a fight, and whom they should avoid. The Caribou uses their antlers as a means of defense when a predator attempts to catch it.

Researchers in many countries have investigated caribou antlers. Extracts from antlers are claimed to have a powerful effects: anti-aging action, enhancing sexual activity, provoking mental alertness, and healing stomach ulcers. It is also claimed to be an effective remedy to cope with arthritis and polyarthritis. Antlers of Caribou have been used for the treatment of a number of diseases for over 2000 years.
